Trainspotter opening Analysis

Danny Boyle's 1996 Trainspotter is a gritty drama following the events in the life of heroin addict Renton. During this opening sequence a total of 30 shots were used. There is very little plot progression, just the introductions of main characters. The implicit meaning of the film is drug addiction and the hard life, which is show in the opening with the use of drugs and the theft of items from a shop. Mid-shots, long-shots, close-ups and low angle shots are used the capture various details such as a chase scene, drug use and a football match. The editing has a very was rhythm, constantly and quickly changing from shot to shot. Besides dialogue  (diegetic sound) the only use of other sound is the use of a punk rock score which matches the action on screen.
